The Badgers exited the League Cup on Wednesday evening after a frustrating 2-0 defeat to Bottesford Town at Cannon Park. Despite dominating the opening 45 minutes and creating several excellent opportunities, we were unable to make their chances count before a much-improved second-half display from the visitors saw them progress to the next round.
Still without several key players through injury, the Badgers were boosted by the welcome return of Alexander Duhameau to the starting eleven after a spell on the sidelines. Just like the weekend, Retford came flying out of the blocks, starting the game as though they had been shot out of a cannon. The Badgers were immediately on the front foot, pressing high and piling pressure on the Bottesford defence.
Carlton Carty was causing all sorts of problems down the left flank, using his pace and trickery to win free kicks in dangerous areas and deliver several inviting crosses into the box. The first real opportunity arrived in the seventh minute when defender Phil Watt rose at the back post, but his header drifted wide of the target.
Lewis Chambers and the returning Duhameau were linking up brilliantly in attack, combining on several occasions to break through the Bottesford defensive line. The movement and attacking play were encouraging, but despite finding themselves in promising positions, the Badgers just couldn’t find that all-important breakthrough. The biggest chance of the half arrived in the 36th minute. A looping delivery from Ben Ashall found Chambers in a dangerous position, but a superb last-ditch block from the visitors denied what looked a certain goal.
We continued to look the more threatening side as the half drew to a close, but somehow the teams went into the break level. There was a growing feeling that the Badgers might live to regret those missed opportunities, and unfortunately, that would prove to be the case.
The second half was a completely different story. Bottesford emerged from the dressing room with renewed confidence and purpose. The side that had looked sluggish in possession and spent much of the opening 45 minutes on the back foot was suddenly taking control of proceedings. The visitors began to dictate possession, forcing Retford deeper and deeper into their own half. The Badgers struggled to rediscover the attacking rhythm that had caused Bottesford so many problems before the break.
On 57 minutes, the visitors made their improved performance count. A powerful effort from distance flew beyond Harvey Woodward and nestled into the bottom-right corner, giving Bottesford the lead against a Retford side that had been so dominant in the first half. It was a bitterly frustrating moment for the Badgers, who now faced an uphill battle to keep their cup hopes alive.
With time ticking away, Retford made changes in an attempt to get back into the contest, sacrificing a midfielder to introduce another attacking option in Oliver Wilson. However, the gamble left spaces for Bottesford to exploit, and on 74 minutes, the visitors doubled their advantage with an outstanding finish.
Picking up the ball towards the left corner of the penalty area, the Bottesford attacker curled a superb effort across goal and into the far-right corner, leaving Woodward with little chance. At 2-0 down, the Badgers had it all to do. Retford continued to battle and almost found a route back into the contest in the 81st minute. Carty found himself in a great position inside the box, but his close-range effort was saved by the Bottesford goalkeeper. The rebound fell to Chambers, who agonisingly fired inches wide. It was another huge opportunity that summed up a frustrating evening in front of goal.
Despite the Badgers’ efforts to find a late response, Bottesford saw out the remaining minutes to secure their place in the next round. A disappointing result for the Badgers, particularly after such an impressive first-half display. On another night, Retford could easily have gone into the break with a comfortable lead, but football can be unforgiving when chances aren’t taken.
Credit must go to Bottesford, who showed exactly why they are one of the strongest sides in the division. Their second-half performance was a complete turnaround, and two excellent finishes ultimately proved the difference. While exiting another cup competition is frustrating, the Badgers’ main priority this season remains their league campaign, and the opportunity to focus fully on climbing the table is certainly no bad thing.
Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of Wednesday’s defeat is the wait for a chance to put things right. With no fixture for over a week, the Badgers will have to sit on this result a little longer than they would like. The next opportunity to return to winning ways comes on Saturday 24th October, when Retford travel to Worsbrough for another important league encounter. Man of the Match went to Joe Lumley. A tireless performance from Joe, who never stopped battling throughout the 90 minutes. His determination and work rate stood out on a difficult evening for the Badgers.
