With the hype around this game it wasn’t surprising that the attendance was a high of 231. This included ground-hoppers that were willing to make over two hour journeys so they could make it to Cannon Park on a blustery Saturday afternoon for a game that was promising to be one to remember.
On Saturday the Badger’s faced mid-table Collingham, but for Retford they wasn’t looked at as a mid-table team. United have struggled for years to get all three points in this game, Collingham was officially Retford’s bogey team, with Retford not getting a win in the last 5 years, home or away. The Badger’s hoped to change this and extend their winning streak to 8 in a row.
On Saturday we travelled to the H E Barnes Stadium to face Dronfield Town Reserves in the hopes of carrying on the momentum and getting another crucial league win. The Badgers could increase their Winning Streak to 7 with a win against Dronfield. New signing Kallum Nix started in the place of the injured Brandon Kane and Dean Conway returned to the starting 11.
Retford continued their form from December into the New Year with a win over mid-table Thorne Colliery. Thorne had also hit some form in the late year with impressive wins over Renishaw and Sutton. Meaning the game was shaping up to be quite a battle, although it was the opposite.
The last game of the year and also the last game of the decade at Cannon Park was certainly one to remember. Retford made 4 changes from the cup game against Woodhouse Colts, Lawrence pushed up the field into right mid, with Swales slotting into right-back
As our first preseason game approaches, I am looking more and more forward to the season starting! There is a good buzz about the club and more importantly within the players; we have had a good start to pre-season having over 40 players to each of the training sessions. As a management team we have worked hard to bring a few new faces to the first team fold this season and we have been impressed with the quality and standard these lads have brought to the club.
