This Saturday the Badgers face Appleby Frodingham at Cannon Park. Appleby are second to bottom in the Central Midlands League and have struggled to pick up points all season. They had two good wins in January when they beat Dronfield Town Reserves and Staveley Miners Reserves. They also had a good result way back in August beating Thorne Colliery 3-2. They suffered a 7-0 loss to top of league, Newark Town last weekend. Meaning that they’ll be wanting to do a lot better this weekend against the Badgers.
When we played them away in December we came away with a 4-0 win, after a Mark West Hat-trick and Zach Casburn goal. It was a very good performance from Retford, clearly in control which is always good to see away from home. Appleby made few chances and didn’t threaten the Retford defence in the game. This may have been due to the new signing of Danny Swales who transferred to the Badgers days before this game. He joined Brook in the centre of defence and they created a partnership in the games that followed. The two of them became a formidable force until Danny was shown a straight Red against Crowle in early February. Swales has now served his ban and will be available for selection for the game on Saturday. Appleby’s Danger man seems to be Harry Burnett-Haynes who has 3 player of match awards, 3 assists and a goal to add to that. Daniel Own could also be a threat with him scoring 3 in five appearances. The man in form for the Badgers is certainly Dean Conway who now has 18 goals from only 10 appearances this season. His Hat-trick against AFC Bentley last Saturday was world class.
We kick off at three so make sure you’re there in plenty of time. Hopefully we can secure another three points in the hopes of finishing the league with the maximum amount of points that we can acquire and hopefully secure promotion at the end of the season. Up the Badgers!
